Reederei Bernd Sibum funded for green upgrades

The shipping line Reederei Bernd Sibum has been awarded funding from the German government for green upgrades to its four Damen Combi Freighters 3850 on order.

The government is aiming to reduce emissions in shortsea shipping, with the vessels undergoing a hybrid propulsion upgrade. Such enhancement will improve safety and provide redundancy for diesel engines.

The vessels, being built at Damen Yichang Shipyard in China, were initially designed to run on biofuel and batteries for peak shaving. With the extra funding now available they’ll also be equipped with ‘Econowind VentoFoils’, thus reducing fuel consumption by 12.5% annually.

Other eco-friendly upgrades include a heat recovery system and extended shore power capacity, allowing the ships to operate emissions-free in port.

The investment in sustainable technology highlights its commitment to a greener maritime future, the firm said. (gy)
