Road organisations appeal to EU
Without any advance warning, the Italian authorities recently issued a message saying that in future carriers must use the Italian system "Sistri" when transporting dangerous goods in Italy. The system monitors dangerous goods routes in Italy. Carriers without a special box in the lorry and not using the Sistri system will be not be permitted to unload dangerous goods in Italy.
Foreign carriers cannot therefore haul dangerous waste in Italy at present. Given this state of affairs, Denmark's road haulage association (ITD), in cooperation with several European sister organisations, has sent an objection to the EU Commission. The trade bodies consider Italy's move to be a discriminating trade barrier. (ben)
