Ship recycling convention enters into force

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and European shipowners (Ecsa) have welcomed the Hong Kong Convention’s global entry into force today. Adopted by the IMO in 2009, the convention sets international standards for safe and environmentally-sound ship recycling.

"This marks a historic milestone after two decades of work," ICS secretary general Thomas A. Kazakos said. With fleet renewal accelerating through decarbonisation, he added, global rules are crucial.

Ecsa’s Sotiris Raptis called the convention "a foundation for further progress" and underlined the importance of a single global standard to ensure safety, sustainability and competitiveness. ICS and Ecsa have long championed the convention as a tool for protecting both workers and the environment. (ah)
