Tanger drives Contship's growth

Contship's maritime container terminal  volume came in at 6.6 million teu in 2014, equating to a 5.7% increase versus 2013. Container volumes handled by the group's intermodal business amounted to 240,000 teu - on a par the throughput in 2013.

Eurogate Tanger, the Moroccan hub, was largely responsible for Contship's growth, as it recorded its best ever results with 1,347 vessels processed (+6%).

Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), the mega hub in Gioia Tauro (Italy), experienced a modest contraction in 2014 compared to the growth trend in the previous two years. The slight decrease in total moves is attributed to systems changes in the summer period and the temporary shutdown of commercial operations in order to handle a UN managed operation.

The average number of teus handled per call was 3% higher in 2014, confirming the general trend towards deploying larger vessel on the main east-west trades. In December 2014, MCT recorded a cumulative 50 million teu handled, and is now preparing for a new record in September 2015, when it celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Cagliari International Container Terminal (CICT/Italy) confirmed its dual-role of Med transhipment platform and gateway for local Sardinian cargo.

La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT/Italy) remained a champion in the North Tyrrhenian market by achieving its best ever record measured in terms of total teus. The complete acquisition of the remaining Speter shareholding in May 2014 boosted the 2014 growth trend 2014 versus 2013. LSCT continued to improve its rail volumes with 10% more rail wagons dispatched, thereby increasing its share of rail transported containers to over 35% of the throughput.

Terminal Container Ravenna (TCR/Italy) gave a slightly lacklustre performance for full year 2014, although there was strong growth in the final months. Problems with the water depth and quay access affected the final result. However, the port authority wants to solve the difficulties this year.

Salerno Container Terminal (SCT/Italy, succeeded in substantially raising its market share in southern Italy in 2014. The facility recorded double digit growth for the second year in succession.
