Truck overtaking ban to enhance safety
Switzerland’s federal road office (Fedro) wants to improve the traffic flow and raise the safety level on national highways by the introduction of local truck overtaking bans. The first of these are already signposted in the Bern and canton Valais regions. Those areas were chosen because of the great amount of traffic, the proportion of trucks to other vehicles and the highway inclines.
The overtaking bans are either permanent or temporary, depending on the situation (according to the time or volume of traffic). At the beginning of 2014 trucks will be banned from overtaking in central and northwest Switzerland, as well as in the Lugano and Chiasso regions in the southeast. The ban will be introduced on main roads in the French-speaking region at the end of the coming year. (ben)
