Vienna hub enters next phase

ÖBB has begun construction of the final expansion phase at its Vienna South freight centre, which will increase terminal capacity by 44% by the end of 2026.

The site, operational since 2016, handles intermodal units between road and rail and is strategically located at the junction of the Pottendorfer line, the S1 expressway and three trans-European railway axes, as the company reported. Current capacity of 380,000 teu will rise to 547,000 teu, supported by new tracks and switches that will simplify operations.

Once it is completed customers will have access to eight 700 m loading tracks. A gantry crane, with automation planned, will add further capacity, while the two existing cranes will be upgraded for future automated operation. Road connections and technical infrastructure will also be adapted.

Judith Engel (pictured left), board member for ÖBB-Infrastruktur, said the expansion strengthens rail freight as a key driver of sustainable transport. (js)
