Equipment for multimodals

In the railfreight area, heavy loads are a day-to-day occurrence. The required equipment is procured by the terminal subsidiary of CSX International in the US from Konecranes. The vehicle fleet will be supplemented with eight new units by December.

CSX Intermodal Terminals (CSXIT), a subsidiary of CSX and simultaneously one of the biggest multimodal providers in the United States with 34 intermodal terminals, has again commissioned Konecranes with supplying lifting devices. Since August, eight new units have reinforced the already existing fleet of 16 Konecranes modules operated by CSXIT. In December 2017 another three machines scheduled to be delivered to CSXIT will follow. The orders were placed in the spring of 2017.

From first to third row

The first delivery will consist of two SMV 52 GC3S rail forklifts, five SMV 4535 TC5 reach trucks and one SMV 4543 TCX5 reach stacker. The last delivery will be supplemented by the order planned for December consisting of three additional SMV 4535 TCX5 reach stackers. The two rail forklifts, which are also called top picks, were adjusted to customer specifications.

The new machines will be delivered with the current folding fastening equipment designed for the handling of trailers from an expanded 40-foot or 12-metre position. The R/R-side forklifts are a new project that Konecranes had developed together with CSXIT in order to fulfil the new construction requirements in place for the US railway vehicle market. The SMV 4543 TCX5 is Konecrane’s most powerful reach stacker in the company’s history and can lift up to 99.2 t / 45 t, five containers in the height of the first row and up to 251 t / 3 t in depth. In addition, the front support lifts of the reach stackers can be used to increase stability and to increase the lift capacity t in the second row to 44 t and in the third row to 30 t. CSXIT has procured its equipment from Konecranes since 2012.
