Equipped for the Arctic
Big Roll Shipping, a Dutch joint venture established by the heavylift specialists Big Lift Shipping and Roll Dock Shipping, has ordered two new carriers in China for the transportation of very heavy modular cargo. Delivery is scheduled for mid-2015.
Big Roll Shipping has ordered two MC class modular carriers for the transportation of ultra-large and very heavy modular cargo from the Cosco Dalian Shipyard Co. The contract includes an option for two more vessels. Even if the ships are only scheduled for delivery in May and August 2015, the company has already settled on the names for the new units. They will be called Big Roll Barentsz and Big Roll Bering, a clear indication of their future area of deployment.
The vessels will both be fitted with dynamic positioning equipment (DP2) and will have the Finnish-Swedish 1A ice-class notation, thus making them highly suited to travel to remote areas, such as the Arctic, as well as for direct offshore supply activities. The MC class is designed with a focus on reliability of operations, short loading and discharging time, high service speeds and low accelerations.
The length of the Big Roll Barentsz and the Big Roll Bering is 173 m, with a beam of 42 m, giving the vessels a deck space of 42 by 125 m. Their decks are completely free of manholes and air heads, etc. The maximum permitted load weights on the decks amounts to 20 t per sqm. The hull depth of the ships is 12 m and the maximum deadweight of the MC class vessels is 21,000 t. The units’ service speed is 13 knots.
Big Roll said that the company is looking forward to its cooperation with the Cosco Dalian Shipyard. The firm stated that the market has already responded very positively to Big Roll’s MC class design.
