Longer, wider, heavier the motto - Buss Group expanding its heavylift and project cargo logistics activities
Heavylift cargo logistics brings many challenges. The Buss Group, based in Hamburg (Germany), has strengthened its position in the heavylift and project cargo segment for the future with its new special transport and logistics division. The field is already one of the core operations of the port services provider.
When it comes to Buss it can always be a little bit more. The company manages the entire transport chain for heavylift cargo and project cargo needs. From collection from the factory, through transport packaging and intermediate storage to loading. In the heavylift and project cargo logistics field, however, it is not just the development of logistics concepts and the expertise of the employees that are crucial – the equipment and the infrastructure in Buss’s multipurpose terminals are also designed to meet the demands of exceptional loads. The infrastructure consists of weight-bearing areas, powerful cranes, special loading equipment and, where necessary, even special heavy loading platforms. For example, at Buss’ Hansa Terminal in Hamburg, packaging units weighing up to 208 t can be handled, using a new Liebherr LHM 600 crane. In synchronous operation with a smaller unit, a computer-controlled LHM 400, it turns into an even more powerful combination, which can handle loads of up to 280 t. The tandem process has proved itself several times at Buss’s Hansa Terminal – not only for heavy loads, but also for special project cargo consignments, including a locomotive and a 56 m barge, which was being taken on shore to be broken up. In the future, Buss Port Logistics Services will become a focal point for the energy industry. The organisation and mapping of the logistics chain for offshore windfarms is a growth area in the company.
Tailwind for heavylift cargo
The logistics service provider offers all the necessary requirements in the Eemshaven, Sassnitz-Mukran and Stade terminals to act as a hub, supplier and service port for offshore windfarms. The geographical location and infrastructure are ideal for the handling and throughput of offshore wind power systems. Initial and final assembly can be completed in the Eemshaven and Sassnitz terminals too. The advantages of these locations are also treasured by offshore firms. Collaboration with the offshore wind power system manufacturer Areva started successfully in Stade and Eemshaven in 2012.
56 m rotor blades
Eemshaven was chosen as the offshore base and assembly port for North Sea windfarm projects. It is located closely to 23 planned and approved windfarm sites in the North Sea. The so-called Orange Blue terminal provides the best nautical conditions – a heavy loading platform on a 630 m quay and a terminal that covers approximately 22 ha. The first joint project with Areva at the location is the construction of the Trianel windfarm in Borkum. All the components of the 40 Areva wind turbines (5 MW each) which are to be installed are offloaded at the Buss Group’s Blue Orange terminal, put in intermediate storage there and then pre-assembled. Areva tower sections of the M5000 type have been placed in intermediate storage since summer. The first gondolas arrived in September, along with hubs and the last of three tower sections. The delivery of rotor blades from Areva’s subsidiary, Areva Blades, based in Stade near Hamburg, is planned for February 2013, and will also be carried out by Buss, of course. Stade has a key role in the supply chain for the provision of the rotor blades. It is the only Areva location where rotor blades are produced. Buss’s terminal in Stade is ideally placed next to the rotor blade factory, ensuring that smooth throughput with a direct connection to the plant is guaranteed.
Buss plans and develops supply
Buss’s terminal in Stadehas already proved itself in the transport of rotor blades for Areva. The 56 m long 22 t project cargo consignments are loaded onto a barge at the 35,000 sqm terminal. The rest of the transport chain, including the barge leg, the load securing on board as well as the short transport from the quayside to the Areva Blades facility, using two tractor units in a relay, was organised by Buss. In addition, there are possibilities for both companies to cooperate in the Baltic Sea, using Buss’s sea terminal in Sassnitz, thanks to the proximity of the terminal to the planned Baltic Sea windfarms. Here, too, the port service provider and wind turbine specialist are closely coordinating forthcoming projects. Buss plans and develops the whole supply to the base port with all transport and throughput activities, as well as storage management. The Sassnitz sea terminal offers a 40,000 sqm facility for project cargo, with a total quay length of 365 m and a maximum draft of between 9.5 and 10.5 m.
Packaging also matters
Correct packaging is vital for transporting not only wind power plants, but all heavylift and project cargo. Proper packaging saves time and money and reduces risk during loading and shipping. Packaging and load security are services which are not usually in a manufacturer’s focus, but play a vital role, particularly when dealing with heavylift cargo. It does not matter if the goods are going to the neighbouring town or to China. What are the fastening points for the lifting tackle for the loading process? Will the wooden crate hold the weight? Buss is well-established for this with its sea packaging subsidiary Securitas Gesellschaft für Seeverpackung. The company has specialised in packaging solutions for the heavylift and project cargo areas for almost 50 years. Packaging is designed and produced for the goods for transportation by sea, rail, air and overland, depending on the specific requirements. Securitas has been certified by the packaging development and testing institute BFSV (Beratung, Forschung, Systemplanung, Verpackungsentwicklung und Verpackungsprüfung, or consulting, research, system design, packaging development and testing, in English). It is the first company in the world to receive this certification.
