Mumbai Ho!

Two heavylift EPC transport tasks headed for the Indian metropolis of Mumbai recently. The first one saw an airfreight consignment flown from Spain to India, whilst the second one involved an overland shipment. Both called for improvisational skills, however.


India’s PCN member Express Global Logistics (EXG) recently transported two sizeable HP heaters across India. The 530 km transport, hauling two components from Chakan to the port of Mumbai, saw EXG deploy both a ten-axled as well as an eight-hydrodrolic-axled unit to shift the 14.4 x 4.7 x 5.1 m units weighing almost 41 t. These vehicles are independently powered trailers, which enabled EXG to benefit from greater manoeuvrability when handling the oversized and very heavy freight.

 

“The contract called for a particularly detailed and intricate route survey, as the loaded trucks were 6.2 m high, and with many permanent and temporary obstructions on the route we had to deal with them appropriately,” said EXG project manager Nandit Dayal. But the best-laid plans of mice and men went agley when the company realised that a new bridge was being constructed at the Sinnar–­Ghoti bypass, on the firm’s preferred route! “We therefore had to find an ­alternative route – at rather short notice!”

 

Planned improvisation

Another energy sector logistics project headed for the Indian metropolis recently. Chapman Freeborn Airchartering took part in the transportation of 45 t of radiant coils from Vitoria (Spain), helping to keep an energy industry project on track. Construction faced delays until the material arrived, so Chapman Freeborn’s India and Spain offices arranged for an AirBridgeCargo Boeing B747-800F to be available on standby.

 

The team was able to assess the load­ability of the cargo and advise the client on the technical requirements to transport it from the factory to the airport, and then oversee the safe handling and delivery of the materials.
