18 May: International Day for Women in Maritime

The maritime industry worldwide is celebrating its first International Day for Women in Maritime today, 18 May 2022. The event goes back to a decision of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Special recognition will be given to women in the industry every 18 May in future.

The day is intended to help promote the recruitment and employment of women in the maritime sector and to strengthen efforts to reduce the gender imbalance in the shipping industry.

Against this background, Gaby Bornheim, who was elected in December 2021 as the first president of the German Shipowners' Association (VDR) in its 115-year history, said: "We know that there is an absolute need for more female seafarers. Not least because shipping, like all other industries, has a recruitment problem." (cj)
