20 new locomotives to haul phosphates in Africa
Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, has received an order for 20 EMD GT42AC locomotives from the Tunisian Railway Company (SNCFT). The traction acquisition is part of an effort to improve infrastructure in North Africa and the Middle East,
The locomotives will primarily haul phosphates and will be designed to cope with the region’s hot, dry climate, rough terrain and sandy conditions.
The first ten locomotives will be delivered to SNCFT in September 2018, and the remaining units are due to be handed over in November 2018.
The locomotives will be manufactured at Progress Rail’s plant in Muncie IN (USA). (ben)
