20,000 cars to be transported by rail

Car maker Seat and operator Pecosvasa Renfe Mercansias have launched a rail link to ship vehicles between Martorell (Spain) plant and the Volkswagen Autoeuropa factory in Palmela (Portugal).

The weekly service will transport more than 20,000 vehicles per year, avoiding 2,400 truck journeys and reducing CO2 emissions by 43%.

Vehicles produced in Martorell were previously carried by train to Salobral (Madrid) and then trucked to the various dealers. Now, the only truck transport will be from the Palmela factory to the distribution depot in Azambuja. The return train journey will take vehicles manufactured in Palmela to the Port of Barcelona, from where they will be further distributed by road. (ben)
