200th locomotive rolls off Transnet's line
Transnet marks a significant milestone as its 200th Traxx 23E locomotive leaves the assembly line, part of the fleet renewal programme involving 240 units. This achievement highlights Transnet's engineering excellence, resilience in overcoming setbacks and commitment to localisation and industrial growth. Michelle Phillips, group CEO, emphasised that modernising the freight rail fleet is vital for reducing business costs and supporting economic development, showcasing the company’s dedication to enhancing freight capacity through sustained investment in rolling stock.
Following a 2023 settlement with partner Alstom, Transnet Engineering ramped up production through a 24/5 shift pattern and improved supply chain stability. In 2024 the project achieved a record 43 locomotives in a year and is on track to deliver the remaining 40 by June 2026. The 200th locomotive exemplifies Transnet Engineering's capability and resilience as it aims to become Africa's leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM), playing a crucial role in South Africa's economic progress.
