2026 budget – road infrastructure funding
Germany's Federal Association of Road Haulage, Logistics and Disposal (BGL) urges decisive action to address the country's ageing motorway bridges. Ahead of the upcoming budget committee meeting, they insist the coalition's pledge to close the financing gap for road infrastructure must be reflected in the 2026 federal budget. Current figures show only half of the deteriorating bridges can be repaired due to insufficient funds, with construction costs rising by 64% since 2016.
The additional € 3 billion already allocated must be available from 2026 to enable reliable planning and continuous project delivery, from bridge repairs to road maintenance and safer truck parking. The BGL also demands that revenue from the truck toll be fully invested in infrastructure renewal and climate-friendly transport. They emphasise that budget stability is vital for enabling investment in electric trucks, charging stations, affordable power, and sustainable fuels to future-proof the freight industry.
