30 energy efficient locos for Brazil
The Brazilian provider MRS Logistica has signed an agreement with the manufacturer Wabtec for 30 new Evolution Series locomotives. The deal is valued at BRL 500 million (EUR 93.4 million) and the first deliveries are scheduled for 2024. These additions will allow MRS to signifcantly improve energy efficiency in rail transport.
Launched in 2022, the ordered ES44ACi models are equipped with Evolution Series diesel engines, which produce 4,500 horsepower with just twelve cylinders.
MRS manages a 1,643 km railway network in the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Approximately 20% of all Brazil’s exports and about a third of the country’s rail cargo are shipped on MRS tracks. (ben)
