400 new locomotives

The German railfreight company DB Cargo intends to acquire new two power locomotives to be used for regular traffic and in shunting yards.

The engines may be powered electrically and with diesel. Manufacturer Siemens won a framework contract for up to 400 vehicles, Vectron Dual Mode locomotives that will be specially adapted for DB Cargo's range of applications. Initially, the carrier will order 100 locomotives of the 248 series.

Deliveries are slated to begin in 2023. With the new locomotives, DB expects to save approximately 8 million litres of fuel and 17,000 t of C02 per year. DB Cargo's aim is to equip around 70% of the diesel locomotives with innovative drives by 2030. (ben)
