A centenary for the Port of Basel

To celebrate 101 years of port operations in Basel, the Port of Switzerland and a number of partners are organising a big port festival from 2 till 4 June 2023. Today, approximately 10% of Switzerland's total volume of foreign trade is now handled via the three Rhine ports in the Basel region.

The port basin I in Kleinhüningen was opened in 1922 and extended with crane systems and logistics facilities for the shipping companies by 1924.

For the anniversary, the Swiss Rhine ports are organising a festival including live concerts, vessel and train exhibitions, company tours like the insight into the famous Bernouilli silo, a festivity mile, ship shuttles etc.

At a media conference, Florian Röthlingshöfer and Simon Oberbeck of the Port of Switzerland spoke of a "Little Venice" atmosphere by the beginning of June. About 100,000 attendees, including visitors from France and Germany, are expected. (cd)
