A step towards underground freight transport
The Swiss federal council has adopted its message on underground freight transport facilities for the attention of the parliament. The law paves the way for the implementation of the Cargo sous terrain project. Specifically, it guarantees that access to the underground facilities must be open to all users under equal conditions.
Cargo sous terrain's concept envisages an underground three-lane tunnel between major logistics centres in the Swiss midlands and the northwest of the country.
The plan is to transport goods at a speed of around 30km/h through this tunnel as from about 2045. At various access points, the consignments will be fed into or withdrawn from the system by means of fully automated lifts. (ben)
