A world debut

DP World has introduced the world's first fully electric straddle carrier fleet at its new GBP 350 million fourth berth at London Gateway. The eight units, manufactured by Kalmar, are part of the first all-electric berth globally. Each zero-emission carrier, costing GPB 12 million, weighs about 62 t and can operate for up to four hours on a 45-minute charge.

DP World says that this development marks a significant advance in sustainable logistics and aligns with its goal to electrify its ports and terminals by 2050.

The new equipment will help manage the largest container ships and support DP World’s sustainability objectives, including its UK operations at Southampton and London Gateway, which now use fossil-diesel-free hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). (pb)
