AA and US Airways to fight US justice department action
AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines Inc, and US Airways Group Inc intend to mount a vigorous and strong defence to the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) effort to block their proposed merger. On 13 August, six state attorneys general plus the District of Columbia, filed a lawsuit in the US district court in Washington DC, to block the proposed merger of American Airlines and US Airways. They said being "determined that the merger – which would create the world's largest airline and leave just three legacy carriers remaining in the USA (American, Delta and United) – would substantially lessen competition for commercial air travel throughout the United States."
Just one week earlier, on 5 August, AMR Corporation and US Airways were happy to receive approval from the European Commission for the pending merger.
