AA Cargo delivers air force monument to Normandy
American Airlines Cargo has transported four bronze sculptures commemorating the 8th Air Force to Normandy, supporting the first-ever monument dedicated solely to the historic US air unit.
The statues depict staff sergeant Maynard Smith, colonel Robert Rosenthal, general James Doolittle and colonel Donald Blakeslee, all honoured for their WWII service. Crafted in Boise, Idaho, they arrived in France for a D-Day ceremony marking the 81st anniversary. American Airlines also flew a veteran to the event.
Director Eric Mathieu, himself French-American, called the mission a symbol of the strong trans-Atlantic connection. The 8th Air Force played a decisive role in securing Allied victory in Europe. (ah)
