Africa's global leadership in drone operations

Stressing the importance of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations to sustainable development, ICAO highlighted the significance of Africa’s global leadership in this area during last week’s African drone forum in Kigali, Rwanda.

The event was convened in light of the rapid expansion of drone use in the region and the transformative importance of these technologies to a vast array of sectors, like medical, mining and humanitarian.

ICAO remotely piloted aircraft systems chief Leslie Cary (back row, 3rd from left), who was on hand to open the event, on behalf of secretary general Fang Liu: "Our work in this area is helping to focus research and development activities for required technologies and certification methods, and the development of a framework for UAS traffic management is well underway."
