AI against piracy

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a part of the guidelines and recommendations to be regularly published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), naval forces and various maritime organisations to help shipowners protect their vessels against piracy.

These guidelines indicate that it is essential to reinforce vigilance when navigating high-risk areas to identify potential threats. AI systems can help predict, track and record an attack.

AI is already being used successfully in other fields of shipping, from ship operations to route optimisation through complex data analysis.

Through increased 'situational awareness' crews can have a complete understanding of activities taking place in the surrounding waters and more opportunities to detect and counter threats before it is too late. (cd)
