AI-driven customs tool expands across Europe

Customs Support Group is rolling out its AI-powered Customs SmartAssist solution across 14 European markets after a successful UK pilot. The platform automates document processing for customs declarations using AI, OCR, and machine learning – handling even handwritten or low-resolution documents. The tool extracts, translates and pre-fills data, saving up to 50% of processing time.

Customs experts then review and approve the entries, combining AI with human oversight – a model CSG calls "real intelligence." CEO John Wegman said: "We’re setting a new benchmark in customs digitalisation, freeing up our experts to focus on high-value tasks." Over one million declarations are expected to be processed through SmartAssist in 2025. (ah)
