AI no match yet for marine engineers, warns CMT

Condition Monitoring Technologies (CMT) has issued a strong reminder that artificial intelligence should not be used in isolation for marine engine diagnostics. While AI can process vast amounts of data, it lacks the sensory and intuitive capabilities of human engineers, says Managing Director David Fuhlbrügge.

"AI can’t smell burnt oil or feel a strange vibration in the engine room," he explains. CMT, which currently uses advanced algorithms but no AI in its tools, sees future tech playing a support role. Human judgement is especially crucial in recognising subtle mechanical issues that no current AI can detect.

"The shipboard engineer is effectively a multi-sensory detector," says Fuhlbrügge. "AI should augment—not replace—crew expertise." (ah)
