Algeciras overtakes Valencia
The Spanish port of Algeciras recorded 6.6% volume growth in 2013 due to terminal upgrades and the installation of four new cranes to serve 18,000 teu vessels. With the increase in throughput, Algeciras overtook its rival Spanish port Valencia as the Mediterranean Sea's busiest hub.
APM Terminals Algeciras, the busiest terminal (by equity share) in APM Terminals' global terminal network, handled 3.29 million teu last year, accounting for 76% of the port’s container throughput.
The majority of APM Terminals' volume in Algeciras was transhipment cargo for Africa and Latin America. Four new cranes were delivered last month to APM Terminals Algeciras by Chinese manufacturer ZMPC.
