Algeria to upgrade northern railway line
The rail automation specialist Estel, a joint venture between the Algerian national company for rail transport Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF) and Siemens, has been awarded an order to deliver rail signalling and operations control equipment for upgrading the line between Beni Mansour and Bejaia (both Algeria) for double-track operation. The order, worth about EUR 95 million for Siemens, was placed by the Algerian railway agency Anesrif.
The Algerian railway network covers a total of about 3,800 track km. As part of the nation's five-year plan, a further 6,600 km are to be added to the existing network by 2015 and another 500 km upgraded for double-track operation. (ben)
