Almost 1 million truck shipments shifted from road to rail
The German intermodal service provider Kombiverkehr reported a 1.1% increase in shipments in 2013, thereby putting an end to the volume shrinkage of 2012, which was caused by the weak economy. The company handled 937,671 truck consignments (around 1.88 million teu) in 2013, and shifted 10,459 more long-distance HGV transports from road to rail.
Last year, domestic volumes in Germany slipped by 0.8% to 217,841 shipments (435,700 teu), whilst the number of international transports rose by 1.7% to 719,830 (1.44 million teu). Kombiverkehr’s 2013 turnover remained stable at EUR 425.6 million (+0.2%). Increasing the number of trains by nearly 50 new departures per week was important for raising shipment volumes last year.
The company reported that the modest upturn continued in the first few months of 2014, and that it expects to see stable domestic volumes and a slight rise in international shipments for the full year. (ben)
