Analysing wind propulsion for commercial ships

The Marin research institute and the American Bureau of Shipping classification organisation (ABS) have launched a joint industry project to facilitate wind propulsion as an important tool in the decarbonisation of shipping.

The second ‘Wind-assisted ship propulsion’ project (WiSP2) picks up where the first phase left off, according to Patrick Hooijmans, Marin’s transport and shipping team leader and the project’s lead manager, who added that the project is open for further participants.

WiSP2 will focus on evaluating real operating conditions over the next two years, to prove the level of fuel savings shipowners can expect to make and thus enable them to make informed investment decisions. It will also address compliance with rules and regulations, especially regarding manoeuvring.
