Anemoi and Lloyd’s Register push for wind standards

Anemoi Marine Technologies and Lloyd’s Register Advisory have released a paper introducing a simplified and accurate method for verifying the performance of wind-assisted propulsion systems (Waps).

The on-off testing approach analyses ship data under regular conditions with the system activated and deactivated, avoiding costly sea trials. Validated by Lloyd’s Register, the method offers improved accuracy in fuel savings predictions and is applicable to all Waps technologies.

According to Anemoi’s Luke McEwen, this marks a step toward a standardised framework that supports better decision-making. A year-long study on the ‘TR Lady’, equipped with Anemoi rotor sails, confirmed average fuel savings of 9.1% and CO₂e reductions of 7 t per sailing day.

Cargill, the vessel’s charterer, noted that the results have helped enhance routing decisions and will guide future Waps deployment. The model supports lifecycle optimisation and real-time fuel forecasting. (gy)
