Antarctic logistics modernised
The Norwegian Polar Institute has ordered ten heavy-duty tracked vehicles to support the planned upgrade of its Troll research station in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. The machines, built by Italian manufacturer Prinoth in its plant in Granby (Canada), and supplied by Norwegian company Owren, are designed to pull up to 150 t across the ice. The first three will arrive by year’s end.
"These are state-of-the-art vehicles tailored to polar operations, developed in close dialogue with our drivers and mechanics," said logistics director Erland Loso. The EUR15.2 million investment ensures essential module transport during the short Antarctic summer. The procurement supports a pre-construction project led by Statsbygg, aiming to replace the ageing Troll station and strengthen Norway’s long-term polar research capacity.
