Antwerp back on track

The Port of Antwerp reported a total cargo throughput of 240 million t in 2021, a 3.8% increase compared to the previous year, even above the pre-pandemic figures of 2019. Container traffic moved sidewards, sticking to the level of last year's record of 12.02 million teu (-0.1%).

The conventional breakbulk sector grew by a significant 73% in 2021 and achieved a throughput of 11.5 million t, its highest volume in the past ten years. Steel’s strong performance (+81%) added to this success. Ro-ro throughput grew 13.9% in tons compared to 2020. Dry bulk throughput surged by 15.1%. The merger between the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge is scheduled for the end of April 2022. (cd)
