Antwerp stems the tide


The Port of Antwerp weathered the storms of 2020 with limited losses. Despite a year dominated by coronavirus and trade tensions, its total throughput reached 231 million t (-3,1%).

 

Container traffic remained strong, setting a new mark of 12 million teu exceeded for the first time in 2020, equating to a growth of 1.3% compared to 2019. The breakbulk segment suffered a setback in throughput of 16.3%, close to the 17% decrease in dry bulk. Ro-ro traffic also dropped by 9.4%.

 

Liquid bulk fell by a total of 4.2%. In 2020, exactly 13,655 seagoing vessels called at the port of Antwerp, a 5.1% decrease compared to the prior year. The gross tonnage of these vessels fell by 5.2% to 394 million. (cd)
