Asia-Pacific airlines stagnated in April

Preliminary figures released by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) have shown that passenger demand remains depressed, whilst cargo demand grew. Renewed border restrictions and lockdowns in many Asian economies quelled hopes of resurgent international markets.

Some domestic economies revived, however, which fuelled demand for goods and saw demand for international air cargo services measured in ftk grow by 42% year-on-year in April, achieving volumes slightly above the same period of 2019.

The majority of the region’s carriers are continuing to burn through cash. Some are undergoing restructuring, whilst others are raising further equity.
