Australia celebrates first section of Inland Rail

Construction on the first section of Australia’s Inland Rail, a 1,727 km railfreight corridor connecting Melbourne and Brisbane, has been completed. The first of total 13 stretches of the AUD 10 billion (EUR 6.2 billion) mega project connects Parkes and Narromine in NSW West Central.

Since building commenced on 13 December 2018, 98 km of existing track have been upgraded and an additional 5.3 km of new track laid. The opening of Inland Rail’s first section was celebrated with the final ‘golden clip’ which deputy prime minister Michael McComack hammered into place on Tuesday (15.9.2020). Construction of the next section is expected to begin before the end of 2020. (ben)
