Authorities to audit seafreight margins

The maritime shipping industry can now see a silver lining on the horizon: in July 2021, the US Federal Maritime Commission established an audit programme to assess ocean carriers’ compliance with federal regulations on detention and demurrage and to step up the federal agency’s monitoring of the marketplace for ocean cargo services.

In August, a bill known as "ocean shipping reform act of 2021" was introduced. This piece of legislation is a major update of federal regulations for the global ocean shipping industry. As such, it is high on the agenda of the Fiata working group sea, which created a dedicated toolkit in 2020 to provide in-depth analysis and recommendations of actions to be taken by Fiata members.
