Barge service for Latin American exports

A new barge feeder service between the port of La Plata, close to Buenos Aires, and the port of Santa Fe, in the northeast of the country introduced by ICTSI’s Argentinian business unit creates a new and direct link to Brazil and Asia.

International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) launched the service on 9 December. It offers at least of two rotations a month between the two ports and will provide connectivity for a market estimated at 80,000 teu.

The first export containers were loaded on to Newport Management’s 500 teu ‘Bagual’ barge. The shippers Insuga and Adecoagro were the first companies to use the service, exporting bone meal to Vietnam and milk powder to Singapore.

The feeder service provides a low-cost inland alternative and contributes to reducing carbon emissions between greater Buenos Aires and the country’s hinterland. (sh)
