BBC Chartering helps Syrian refugees

BBC Chartering, a Germany-based multipurpose and heavylift shipping services provider, has reported that its BBC Iceland vessel assisted in a rescue operation where more than 300 Syrian refugees were found floating in fishing boats off the Sicilian coast on 13 September.

The Italian coastguard requested the BBC Iceland to take on some refugees, as coast guard vessels at the scene had insufficient capacity. 134 Syrians, all men, were transferred to the BBC Iceland. On instruction of the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the vessel was asked to proceed to the Port of Pozzalo (Sicily) where a tug boat safely took over the refugees.
