Best’s next step in Barcelona

The port of Barcelona has approved the development of a new phase of the Best terminal, which belongs to Hutchison Ports. The port and terminal operator is set to invest around EUR 60 million in its facility on the Prat wharf.

EUR 31 million will be spent on civil engineering works to increase capacities by 26%, and EUR 29 million on new machinery, including 14 automated cranes (ASCs).

The work, to be carried out on a 10 ha plot that the port of Barcelona handed over to Hutchison a year ago, will start by 1 May. On completion the concessionaire will have 34 container blocks, up from 27.

The terminal currently has 54 ASCs, two RMG cranes at the rail terminal, 34 shuttle carriers and 13 post-panamax super-dock cranes, which can operate today’s huge ULCVs. The first phase of the project is due to come on stream in late 2023. (sh)
