Big bridge encouraging Gambia - Senegal trade
A new 942 m long bridge spanning the Gambia River has become a safer and quicker route compared to the risky ferry crossing or the long detour between the northern and southern parts of Gambia and Senegal.
The USD 93.68 million bridge, which was almost entirely financed by the African Development Bank Group (AFDB), allows traffic to flow freely, facilitates and increases sub-regional trade. The AFDB said the infrastructure also opens up rural areas.
Before the bridge was built, travellers had to wait hours or even days for a ferry, leading to huge losses of perishable goods and market produce. (ben)
