Bound4Blue confirms major fuel savings on LDA ro-ro ship
The wind propulsion tech firm Bound4Blue has reported confirmed daily fuel savings of 1.7 t on the LDA ro-ro vessel 'Ville de Bordeaux', after installing three 'eSail' suction sails on the ship in 2024.
A third-party assessment by Bureau Veritas Solutions covering twelve months showed annual savings of 568 t of fuel and 2,181 t of CO₂ emissions, with peaks of up to 5.4 t saved per day.
The Airbus-chartered vessel runs between Europe and the US, and the savings were achieved without weather routing. The findings underscore the efficiency of eSails in various wind conditions and their impact on emissions under FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS regulations.
LDA praised the simplicity and speed boost, while Bound4Blue highlighted the retrofit potential or many different types of vessels. (ah)
