Boxes keep flowing into Los Angeles

Container throughput in California (USA) continues apace. For the fourth consecutive month, the Port of Los Angeles has set a new single-month cargo record. In July, the port moved more than 912,000 teu, making it the busiest July in the port’s 112-year history.

Container exchange per vessel reached the level of above 9,900 teu. In the same month, imports increased by 8.7% to 476,000 teu compared to the previous year. Exports decreased by 4% to 161,000 teu while empty containers increased by 20.7% to 274,000 teu. All figures combined, July’s throughput volumes reached the record level of 912,000 teu.

Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka remains optimistic: “Despite the continued decline in exports and high level of uncertainty driven by trade tensions, we continue to optimise our facilities. Seven months into 2019 overall volumes have risen by 6% compared to 2018.” (cd)
