Bridge closure: ferries ship intermodal trains

Denmark's government has closed the Great Belt bridge to pocketwagons with semi-trailers until at least 27 January 2021, after a semi-trailer from the Carlsberg-Brauerei threatened to fall off a moving DB Cargo Scandinavia train because it was not properly attached to the wagon's locking bolster.

The incident is similar to an accident that happened at almost the same place on 2 January 2019, when an insufficiently secured Carlsberg semi-trailer was blown off a DB Cargo Scandinavia pocketwagon and collided with a bypassing diesel train.

Stena Lines is now shipping the intermodal trains as conventional trains to Sweden. During the third week in January, the ferry company transported 30% more direct trains on the Rostock-Trelleborg route between Germany and Sweden. (ben/J. Streuli)
