Bye-bye, British airports

Today, 31 January 2020, the day the United Kingdom officially leaves the European Union, it is worth looking back on last year’s air freight performance at Britain’s airports.

For the first eleven months including November 2019, ACI Europe recorded the following results for UK airports with a throughput of more than 100,000 t: In 2019, 1.461 million t of freight were moved through London-Heathrow, 5,9% less than in the same period of 2018; East Midlands recorded a throughput of 307,000 t (-0.1%), Stansted 203,000 t (-2.5%), Gatwick 101,000 t (-2.2%), just ahead of Manchester (100,000 t or -4.7%).

Therefore, all major hubs had lost ground before the year-end business. In comparison, airports in the rest of Europe witnessed an overall drop in volume of 2.2%, which was primarily due to a downswing at hubs within the EU (-3.6%), while airports outside the EU saw their throughput increase by 4.7%.
