Capacity of the South Africa – Swaziland line to be doubled

South Africa’s Transnet Freight Rail and Swaziland Railway have signed a MOU for the Swaziland rail link project to reduce rail and road traffic congestion. The project includes the construction of a 150 km railway line from Lothair (Mpumalanga, in South Africa) to Sidvokodvo (Swaziland).

The new line will be 50 km long in South Africa and 100 km in Swaziland. Once completed, the line will accommodate 2.5 km long trains with a load of up to 26 t/axle and 200 wagons and provide capacity for twelve trains per day.

The line has been designed to carry trains with 150 general freight business wagons and will operate seamlessly without stopping at the border. (ben)
