CBP and CPKC deploy rail scanning tech at border
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has partnered with Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway (CPKC) to enhance security at the Laredo rail port of entry.
Under CBP’s 'Donations Acceptance Program', CPKC has donated a high-tech vehicle and cargo inspection system (Vacis) which includes a radiation portal monitor to detect and categorise threats. The new equipment enables 100% scanning of trains crossing the Patrick J. Ottensmeyer International Railway Bridge between Laredo and Nuevo Laredo.
Funded by CPKC, the system became operational following one of the fastest agreement approvals in the programme’s history. CBP’s Diane J. Sabatino welcomed the collaboration, highlighting its role in facilitating lawful rail trade. CPKC sees the investment as key to maintaining a secure and efficient corridor with Mexico, the US’s top trading partner. (ah)
