China Southern launches freighter link to Scotland
Glasgow Prestwick airport (PIK) has begun its first scheduled freighter services from China, operated by China Southern Air Logistics. The new connection from Guangzhou launched one week ago, on 16 May, with four weekly flights, with plans to scale up to daily service.
The agreement doubles Prestwick’s scheduled freighter traffic and establishes a direct export route for high-value Scottish goods like seafood and whisky. Airport CEO Ian Forgie hailed the move as a "game changer" and said further airline announcements are expected.
PIK has invested GBP 2.3 million in handling equipment and cool chain facilities over the past year. The airport’s widebody handling capacity, 24/7 operations, and uncongested infrastructure were key to securing the deal. (ah)
