CMT warns of compliance risks after Marpol sampling update
CM Technologies (CMT) is urging shipowners to upgrade their sampling practices following new IMO rules under Marpol annex VI and SOLAS II-2.
The revised guidelines require a 50% increase in sample volume – now 600 ml – and stricter handling, sealing and documentation standards. Improvised or contaminated sampling can lead to rejected lab tests, fines, or disputes during port state control inspections. CMT warns that samples sent in recycled bottles risk invalidation due to chemical residues, whereas certified sample bottles, tamper-evident seals and lockable storage cabinets can help raise standards, reduce risk and improve transparency throughout the fuel supply chain.
Responsibility for Marpol sample storage now lies with owners, not captains. CMT offers compliant equipment and training to help fleets meet the new requirements and avoid costly legal or operational setbacks. (ah)
