Complementing the big alliances

The new partner is from South Korea. After HMM officially joined The Alliance, the shipping company carrier SM Line has agreed with 2M Alliance to co-operate on the Asia-America route starting 1 April this year. The 2M Alliance is run by the global carriers Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

SM Line was launched in 2016 after a South Korean conglomerate, the Samra Midas Group, which also owns Korea Line Corporation and Korea Shipping Corporation, took over parts of the bankrupt's assets of Hanjin Shipping Group.

SM Line, which is currently running 21 container vessels, expects its partnership with 2M Alliance to help it expand capacity and save costs on its main service route of Asia-America with added port coverage and faster transit times. It also anticipates that the partnership will help strengthen its reefer container service. (mw)
